Innovative and iconic design

Inspired by the famous Tulip Chair created by Finnish designer Eero Saarinen in 1956, let us introduce you to the Tulip Chair at Nüspace. This iconic chair was originally designed to accompany the dinner table from the same collection, and it continues to attract attention with its soft, harmonious curves.

Transition to polypropylene

One of the remarkable features of the Tulip chair is the use of experimental materials of its time. The designer dared to innovate by using fiberglass for the seat and aluminum for the base, creating a modern and avant-garde aesthetic. These materials were changed to make way for polypropylene.

Presence in popular culture

The Tulip chair has become a popular design icon thanks to its frequent appearance in numerous films and television series. It quickly became a symbol of 1960s design, associated with a bold, futuristic aesthetic. Despite the passage of time, the Tulip chair remains timeless, affirming its status as a timeless piece of design.

Spatial and original appearance

The distinctive central leg and white plastic shell give the Tulip chair a spatial and contemporary appearance. Its unique design offers a bold alternative to conventional shapes, bringing a touch of originality to any interior. Whether in a modern living room, a dining room or a designer office, the Tulip chair blends perfectly into various ambiances and adds a touch of modernity and sophistication.

20th century classic

Originally, the design of the Tulip table and chairs came straight from the imagination and intelligence of a Finnish architect, Saarinen. As a teenager, he often helped his father design furniture. He went on to study architecture at Yale and taught it in Michigan. When he decided to design a furniture collection he wanted to create something that had never been done before: a chair with only one leg. That was in 1955.

Originellement pensée pour correspondre à la table à dîner de la même collection, la chaise Tulipe aux courbes douces et harmonieuses est fabriquée avec des matériaux expérimentaux à son époque.

A successful bet, the chair was a phenomenal success from its first appearances. Thus, soon after, he created the Tulip tables. This lack of legs on the table provides visual lightness but also allows people to gather around the table without being encumbered by table legs. Streamlining the base of the table resulted in a clean, classic and decidedly modern look that had not been seen elsewhere at the time. The wide variety of finish options, from laminate to marble to wood, makes it the perfect table for any decor.

But of the entire Tulip line, it is the chair that best evokes the organic form that inspired it. The gentle curve of the cup formed by the flower's petals is echoed in the rounding of the backrest (and arms in the armchair version). The seat follows the almost flat underside of the flower, then merges into the deceptively delicate stem, carrying the exquisite arch to the base. All of this is absolutely deliberate and intentional, recalling the architectural forms Saarinen used for the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and Washington Dulles International Airport.

Inspirée de la célèbre icône de design crée par Saarinen en 1956, voici la table Tulipe. L'utilisation d'un piètement central permet aux convives de pouvoir se placer librement autour de la table sans être gêné par quatre pieds.
