From the Bauhaus modernism movement, designer Mies Van der Rohe created the original collection for a very special occasion. Indeed, it was during the 1929 World's Fair, which took place in Spain, that the government asked the designer and his wife to create the German pavilion, a modern building, to represent Germany at the fair.
But when construction was complete, he didn't want to stop there. He thought of dressing the interior with a collection of furniture. So came to him the idea of designing a luxurious armchair with premium materials. As he said himself, it had to be monumental. Thus, we understand better why he said he wanted to be inspired by the time of the pharaohs and the Romans.
