Born in northeastern Italy, designer Bertoia left at the age of 1 to join his brother in the United States. The year was 1930. During a school program, he studied metal drawing and sculpture. During his university studies, he befriended the greatest like Saarinen, Eames or Knoll.

It was in 1952 that the first chair, named Diamond, was marketed by Knoll Inc. Given the success of this chair, other models followed.
